Mosquitoes!

August 31, 2012

Mosquitoes!

Even though Tropical Storm Isaac has brought flooding to some of the Gulf states, it has also brought much needed rain to the inland states in its path. And in all the regions through which it has passed, it will leave standing water …

Mosquitoes cause more suffering than any other organism on earth. They are vectors for Dengue, Encephalitis, Heartworm, Malaria, Meningitis, West Nile Virus and Yellow Fever.

Despite the extremely dry summer most parts of the US have experienced, the mosquito-borne West Nile virus is raging in many states. As of August 28th, all of the lower 48 have reported West Nile virus in humans, animals or mosquitoes.

The latest numbers from the CDC include:

  • 1590 human cases
  • 889 human neuro-invasive* cases
  • 701 human non-neuro-invasive cases
  • 66 human deaths

* encephalitis or meningitis

This is the highest infection rate since 1999, when West Nile virus was first detected in the United States.

Over 70 percent of confirmed cases come from Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas. Nearly half of all  cases come from Texas.

The two most important things you can do are:

  • keep yourself, your family and your animals from being bitten by mosquitoes
  • kill mosquitoes in standing water (bleach, vinegar) and in the air

Sources for mosquito control:

For long term mosquito suppression, build houses to attract bats and birds, which each eat tens of thousands of insects a day.

For immediate mosquito suppression, sprinkle livestock with food-grade diatomaceous earth to protect them from biting insects.

Seven years after Katrina

August 30, 2012

Seven Years After Katrina

As Tropical Storm Isaac began heading for Florida just before the Republican convention, I guessed it was being guided to disrupt it. Then it veered west and started heading for the still bleeding Gulf coast.

How eerie that Isaac is hitting Louisiana seven years to the day after Katrina…

Morning headlines report tens of thousands being evacuated because of at-risk levees.

Low-lying, parched areas are being pounded with storm surge wounding communities already weakened by Katrina and polluted by the BP oil spill. The ensuing havoc is displacing thousands, inundating homes and businesses, drowning people and animals, ruining cars and machinery.

Weather modification is no longer speculation, as graduate programs at Stanford and University College attest. And it’s a technology in the hands of powerful forces around the planet.

It will be interesting and perhaps predictive to see how this storm plays out.

J Edgar Hoover was quoted as saying:

“The individual is handicapped by coming face-to-face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists.”

He was certainly in a position to know what he was talking about.

What will all the chemical-laced seawater do to the land, much of it stricken by drought or flood, over which it falls as Isaac moves inland?

.

Ralph W Emerson was quoted as saying:

“God offers to every mind its choice between truth and repose. Take which you please, you can never have both. Between these, as a pendulum, man oscillates. He in whom the love of repose predominates will accept the first creed, the first philosophy, the first political party he meets, most likely his father’s. He gets rest, commodity and reputation; but he shuts the door of truth. He in whom the love of truth predominates will … abstain from dogmatism, and recognize all the opposite negation between which, as walls, his being is swung. He submits to the inconvenience of suspense and imperfect opinion, but he is a candidate for truth, as the other is not, and respects the highest law of his being.”

Meanwhile in the mountain west, fire!

The TWH Freak Show Continues

Oh how psychopaths hate having to be accountable when they get caught doing their thing. They absolutely hate it. It messes up their persona and sometimes throws them off their game a wee bit, and most of all, it interferes with their cruel and insatiable gratification games.

Psychopaths relentlessly pursue whatever gratifies them. They’re gratification addicts and since they have no conscience and are completely immoral, the only thing that restricts them are accountability and personal resources. So, perhaps you can understand how the glare of publicity can be so inconvenient for them.

When they get caught, they do various things depending upon how advanced their pathology is. The older they are, the worse they are. Sometimes they apologize and make nice for a while. Sometimes they change jobs or move. (There is no Viagra for morality and somehow they know they can’t keep up their act for long.)

The glimpse we all got into the TWH torture industry earlier this year with that undercover video will again be on display, albeit not undercover this time, at their upcoming World Celebration this weekend. If you missed it, you can see the vid, get the source link and read a recap here. Jackie McConnell, the “hall of fame trainer of champions” who was filmed torturing horses was given a slap on the wrist in consideration of his infirmities. Someone is protecting this monster and I, for one, can’t wait until we find out who that someone is.

The Tennessean and the TWH Registry is naturally, laying it on thick about how wonderful it all is. Collusion. They even put up a video of the “caring” application of a four-inch shoe to an older show horse. If you watch the video you see that the horse does not move a muscle during the long shoeing ordeal. It should be noted that TWH are routinely beaten, especially about the head, if they flinch during the many steps involved in soring.

What are these people drinking or smoking?

Here’s the latest from The Tennessean:

“The Tennessee Walking Horse industry is going on the offensive this week after disputes with federal inspectors at the Celebration, the industry’s premier event.

U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarians are in Shelbyville, Tennessee, checking competing horses for signs they’ve been intentionally injured to induce their unique gait. Frequently during the competition – including on at least five occasions this morning alone — USDA veterinarians have cited horses when local inspectors and an independent veterinarian found no signs of injury.

Tonight, the face of the walking horse industry’s reform effort collected a bilateral soring citation. Shelbyville trainer Winky Groover recently appeared in several newspapers and television reports explaining what’s being done to clean up walking horse shows. The issue came to the fore after the May release of an undercover video showing former hall-of-fame walking horse trainer Jackie McConnell beating and soring a horse.

Groover said it was unfair to cite him on I’m Jiminy Cricket in the 2-year-old Walking Stallions class.

His last citation for soring was in 2005, the watchdog group Friends of Sound Horses’ database shows, and Groover has said in the past he’s worked hard to clean up his operation and the industry as a whole.

“(I’m Jiminy Cricket) was perfectly sound,” Groover said. “When the inspector turned him down, I took him to the veterinarian, and he was perfectly sound. I think that horse had a big chance of winning the division.”

At least two congressmen have written Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack questioning whether the inspections are fair this year. The first was Tennessee Congressman Scott DesJarlais on Aug. 16. Kentucky Congressman Harold Rogers, appropriations committee chair, wrote a letter today.

“I want to stress the serious nature of these concerns and allegations of one-sided rulemaking changes, biased inspection practices, and threats against the Walking Horse industry in general,” Rogers wrote.

USDA spokesman Dave Sacks wasn’t available tonight but said last week USDA inspections are fair. He also addressed DesJarlais’ letter.

“USDA did in fact receive the congressman’s letter,” he wrote in an email. “We are looking into the concerns that he raised and will respond through official correspondence channels as quickly as possible.

“In the meantime, we remain committed to achieving our stated goal of ending the cruel and inhumane practice of soring.”

One industry group is inviting the media to examine some rejected horses just after 1 p.m. Tuesday in an effort to demonstrate what’s happening.

Many in the industry believe there’s an effort to shut down the Celebration because the local inspection group, SHOW, is in court against the USDA over new, mandatory rules to fight horse soring. The USDA contends those rules standardize penalties across 12 local inspection groups — all certified to inspect at shows in the USDA’s stead. SHOW contends they leave no room for due process if horse trainers and owners disagree with inspectors’ findings.

The USDA is threatening to take away SHOW’s certification.

The problem at the Celebration is the way at least one inspector is palpating the horses’ legs, said Dr. John Bennett of Shelbyville, one independent veterinarian invited to the show. Under the Horse Protection Act, a citation comes if the horse flinches after the inspector presses hard with the flat of his thumb. Using the thumbnail and running the length of the pastern, or lower leg, will cause any horse to flinch, Bennett said, and that’s a violation. The horse is out for the length of the competition, and the trainer could face federal charges.”

This has gone on for so long, it’s hard to know what to hope for. I feel so sorry for these beautiful, sweet horses being mutilated and tortured for the egoistic enjoyment of these callous, ignorant people.

Just another reason why, two thousand years on, we remain a zero-order civilization.

Word Study: Chivalry

Chivalry derived from the Old French of the late 13th century for horseman or mounted knight, chevalerie. Over time, chivalry expanded to denote a kind moral integrity but always retained its original connection to a horseman.
Today, chivalry includes meanings related to knighthood and nobility. Secondary meanings that denote the cavalry and the art of war came from the Middle Latin caballarius which means horseman and from the Latin caballus which means a mounted knight and courtly behavior.

WD-40 to the rescue

WD-40 to the Rescue

Excerpted from an email I got from my aunt …

“I got up early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted a neighbor’s beige truck. I went over, woke him up and told him the bad news. He was very upset and of course wanted to figure out what to do to repair the damage. Not too much later, another neighbor walked over and told him to go get his WD-40. He did, he sprayed it on the red paint and the red paint came off without marring the paint job on the truck.”

Most impressive.

You might be interested to know that WD-40 stands for  Water Displacement #40. The product was the result of the search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts.

WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a water displacement compound.. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40.

WD-40 Uses

43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

44. Safer than baby oil for detangling horse manes and tails.

And here’s the thing: the main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil.

Of course!

The Best Strategy for Removal of Corporate Psychopaths

We can’t be reminded too often that the controllers in any organization are almost always old men and women who have risen to positions of influence because of the their psychopathic nature. They have bought, bullied, charmed, lied, manipulated, murdered their way into control.

At core, they are a bunch of hyenas doing what they do in the cover of night, in packs. It is bloody work, but it’s nothing personal.

When the sun rises and a lion shows up, they run, they give up their own and eventually they turn on each other. This is how to hasten that. We are the lion.

Word study: Memory

August 19, 2012

Word Study: Memory

Memory comes from the mid-13th century Anglo-French word memorie meaning recollection, remembrance, mind, record.

Of course, one’s memory is part of their mental faculty, which deteriorates with age … or so we are told and seem to remember.

“I am grown old and my memory is not as active as it used to be. When I was younger I could remember anything, whether it had happened or not; but my faculties are decaying now and soon I shall be so I cannot remember any but the things that never happened. It is sad to go to pieces like this, but we all have to do it.”   Mark Twain, Autobiography

If you listen to the things people say, and your own self talk, you might notice how often we fulfill the mental programs that least serve us. What is that about?

Memory can be delicious or horrific, helpful or hurtful. Once we have a memory, can we adjust it for accuracy or comfort?

The things we remember become our blueprint for living. Yet, scientists tell us, and experience confirms that this blueprint comes from our first few years of life, when our brains are faithfully downloading what other people say, do and speak. We integrate all of this as truth, whether it is, or not.

How reliable is memory? A game of telephone or a piece of gossip can supply some answers there. How many times have we heard investigators talk about evidence getting throw out because a witness has been unable to remember a face or a fact? How often do we forget who told us what or how something works?

How come selective memory usually sabotages us? Our lives provide the intricate signature of every limiting belief that we have let someone else put into our minds, whether by chance or intent. Educators and psychologists tell us that the universal wound is “I’m not good enough.” That explains a lot, doesn’t it?

What is cellular memory? Does memory (thought and feeling) truly come to reside in our cells and manifest in our consciousness?

What is deja vu? Is it pattern recognition or time travel or something else?

I have no doubt that our minds are being messed with in many ways, even more than we know, and that our memory needs vigilant attention and protection if we wish it to be something we can rely on now and in the future.
